Re: other stories I loved this story and the Cripple.
Were any of the other slavefics starring Wilson and House good?
See above. I thought "Animal Instincts" was absolutely brilliant.
I remember the one with Chase as slave: aside from thinking that I could imagine Rowan selling his son, it didn't really work for me. (Which is odd, because one of the things I'd really like to see - a Jeeves/House story, kinda - would be a story about a deeply protective servant taking care of House.)
The OTI in this universe makes more sense than the equivalent department in the Cripple. I couldn't see the economic sense of not using House's medical skills in that world.
The way I figured it: the AMA in the USNA universe, had been stringent about revoking the medical licences of enslaved people, and refusing to grant a medical licence to a slave. Their front reason for doing this is that it would compromise patient welfare if a doctor was owned and therefore not able to make independent medical decisions, but their main reason was really that a medical student and intern piles up a lot of debt on the road to becoming a doctor, and if a doctor could become property with a medical licence, there would be nothing to stop investment companies from loaning wannabe doctors money on terms that pretty much assured they would get into unrepayable debt and could be claimed for slavery, right after they were licenced. Then hospitals instead of employing junior doctors, could just own them or lease them, much more economically sound. So the AMA resisted this until Commerce got too politically powerful, which happens not long after Richard is enslaved.
