I'm very glad that England is trying to change the USNA. I do have a hard time with the concept that the whole world would role over and accept this degree of wrongness. Although God knows, we do accept alot. I also like to think that parts of Canada while conquered in this story would still be resisting (at min. trying to send escaped slaves overseas.)

There is a certain brutal logic to Sam keeping Richard especially if Sam actually believes that Richard killed his wife. Then to justify it to himself, he ensures that Richard has a better quality of life with him then he would in the arena.
