Received over the weekend (yes it has been 25 years...):

Certificate of Merit

Awarded in honour of her selfless devotion and services to Slash Fandom to

JANE CARNALL

In celebration of 25 years providing us all with Adventure*, Romance** and occasionally HOT SEX***.

She has become a close and wonderful friend to many a slasher****, providing help, support and porn wherever she can. With gratitude to Blake 7 whose interesting characters***** set her feet on this happy queer road she now travels. Congratulations, looking forward to a further 25 years.

Ann Johnson

Director of the Jane Carnall Appreciation Society since 1983

* With proper plots.

**Often the tortured, convoluted kind we love.

***Not enough hot sex in my opinion but begging often helps.

**** Some of us are even privileged enough to call her family.

***** Real hot sexy men and women. You didn't think she watched it for the great plots did you.

First 25 people to ask between now and 30th November will get a flashfic for Christmas. Any fandom I've ever written in over the past 25 years. Give me fandom, word, and (optional) theme. You may describe the kind of story you'd like, I may randomly ignore you - you can ask for something new, something old, something borrowed, something else...

Aw, how sweet! And yay for 50 000 words of fiction this November -- I haven't commented because I am so fucking braindead and exhausted these days, but "The Games" prompted me to read not only it, but also the original Keptverse, which I had been avoiding as I do not read WIPs -- except when they're yours, because I mostly cannot resist your writing, and I'm a) really enjoying it, and b) fascinated to see where you take it next, as c) I've been watching you explore these situations and issues for more than twenty years ("Cold Freedom," "All Alone," etc.), and you've never failed to do something interesting and thought-provoking and unexpected except that it's from you.

And for that reason, I'd like to request a B7 drabble on the theme of slavery. Because I'm interested in how you'd handle those characters, in that context, twenty years later.

Happy slash anniversary!

Literally a 100 words? Or "drabble" in the loose sense of flashfic?

Whoops, sorry -- I thought you'd used the word "drabble" in your offer. (See above re: braindead and exhausted.) Whatever you're offering is what I'm asking for!

Hey. I am a British science-fiction fan. Under no circumstances do I use the word "drabble" except in its original, precise, meaning of a "story of exactly 100 words" with a title of up to 15 words, hyphens to-be-argued-about. I'd be banned from Novacon. Not that I've been in years.

Not that I don't like writing drabbles. I do. I think they're great. I am sporadically working on a 10 000 word story told in exactly 100 drabbles. They're fun - like writing haiku, only better, because I don't know Japanese.

...but a flashfic is easier, and I am kind of hoping to get 25 of them written.

\o/ That is very well deserved and very lovely!:):):):) ::dances you lots::

Can I have a flashfic? Can I have quantum leap? I'm sure you've written a quantum leap but if you haven't can I have Mash? I would like cuddling for warmth but I am happy for any or everything I ask for to be randomly ignored.

I want, ooh, I want Austen slavefic, please. Because she (and you) would do it so interesting.

Oh god. The only Austen fanfic I ever wrote was the procrastinator story, which was metafic. *seeks escape clause* You're evil. On the other hand, um, i did plan on writing Austen fanfic this November. And there was actual canon slavery then, so... Um. Okay.

Congratulations on longeveity! I'm glad to have you as a friend.

Would you feel moved to write something in Babylon 5 about a female character (preferably with Ivanova, of course, but there are a number of excellent female characters there)? Word: stars.

Congratulations on longeveity! I'm glad to have you as a friend.

Thank you! Me too.

Also. I hate to disappoint you... but I did say only fandoms I've written over the past 25 years, and I've never written in Babylon 5. Or Due South, either. Or indeed Doctor Who. Or X-Files. I've enjoyed them and enjoyed fanfic written in them... but never written in them myself.

Hmmm, you're right. I remember talking about B5 with you, but not any writing. How about some Biblical/other mythology piece, preferably with no slaves, but with stars?

Even though we don't know each other, I thought I would take a chance and request a story.

Before I saw this entry I was thinking about your current slave fic. You have Crowley in it and you mentioned a Governor having a new slave. What about Doyle being that new slave?, maybe as a plant. There could be a certain prestige in having a British slave.

Crowley might even know Doyle and has to stand by why he is hurt, or really however, you feel about the story.

Hi,

I hope you don't think this comment is too cheeky! If so, I apologise.

I was doing a Google search for slavefic, and this post came up. I skimmed through the comments, and there's a lot of talk about you having written slavefic. Could you possibly tell me where to find your slavery fics, please?

Thanks,

Lanta.

My slavefics...
[info]janecarnall
2009-05-30 11:49 am UTC (link)
I have actually written less slavefic than all these comments would suggest!

Many many years ago - sometime in the 1980s - I wrote a short story called Masters of the Universe which is a Blake's 7 take-off of Gorean fanfic, with gender-reversal.

In 1987, I wrote a B7/ST:TOS crossover called Cold Freedom.

(Not long afterwards, I also wrote an AU TOS story called "What is Honour?" which I thought I must have uploaded to my website, but evidently not.)

About 10 years later, 1997-99, I wrote a slightly AU ST:tng story called A Good Job.

In 2004 I began (and finished in 2005) a sequence of episodes I named MirrorM*A*S*H - a series of flashfics, really, though they did develop plot and story and end up coming to a conclusion. This is an alternate-universe M*A*S*H where BJ has a beard.

(Then in 2006, I was banned from livejournal for joining a pro-breastfeeding campaign. I find this as weird as you probably do. E-mails I received from Denise Paolucci at that time are why I won't be on Dreamwidth, certainly not while the members are helping with development/while it's in beta. So I exported my journal first to Greatestjournal and then just before GJ died I fled to Insanejournal: but most links to MirrorM*A*S*H go to my permanently-suspended LJ.)

In 2006, I began a sequel to MirrorM*A*S*H called Through the Mirror. This is still a WiP, though it is up to part 17. And it's not really slavefic, though obviously it makes references to when Father Mulcahy was a slave.

In 2008, I began a story set in [info]poisontaster's Keptverse, which is rolling towards its conclusion even as we speak. (I swear! Really! *procrastinates guiltily*)

Okay, I guess I have written quite a lot of slavefic. But in the grand total of everything I ever wrote, I still think it's not so much. :-)

(And banned for breastfeeding? Huh?)

Heh. I was not banned for breastfeeding. I was banned for having a default icon on my journal that showed a baby breastfeeding. LJ Abuse/Six Apart had a regular campaign against such awful, awful icons back in 2006. The current owners of LJ have lifted that specific ban, but LJ Abuse informed me that as I'd adopted that icon on purpose as a protest knowing it was banned, I was permanently banned.
