Ask me for a short story based in the Austenverse.

Give me: pairing (or a single character, if you prefer); and your choice of situation, theme, or word.

You can choose any of the novels or other published writing, but you can't pick one that someone else has already picked (unless you come up with a really fine proposition, in which case I might be persuaded to break the rules).

Suppose Mr Collins chooses to propose to (having skipped Jane, been refused by Elizabeth, snubbed by Mary, and considering Kitty to have too frivolous a disposition) Lydia in his quest to maintain the Bennet connection. How do they get on and how does the rest of the story play out?

Horridly, I think. Not very Austenesque - "let other pens dwell on guilt and misery". However, I will see what I can do...
